About the Seagulls

More than just a club...

Our Roots & Comeback

The Bowen Seagulls Rugby League Club has always been more than just a team - it’s a symbol of resilience, pride, and community. Originally established in 2004, the club rapidly became a beacon for junior footy in the Whitsundays, giving kids in the region a place to belong, grow, and play with heart.

But the journey hasn’t been easy. After decades without a senior side, the Seagulls soared back into senior competitions with renewed energy, fielding Reserve Grade and Women’s teams for the first time in nearly 30 years. That comeback wasn’t just about footy - it was about community spirit. Volunteers, families, and local sponsors all came together to breathe life into the club once again. Today, the Seagulls are stronger than ever, with players representing Bowen across all age groups and divisions.

Community Spirit & Awards

We don’t just play rugby league - we build a community.

In 2024, the Bowen Seagulls were proudly named NRL Community Rugby League Club of the Year, recognising the club’s incredible commitment to inclusion, participation, and grassroots values. From reducing rego fees to supporting struggling families, the Seagulls have always put people first.

In just a few short years, our player base has grown from around 100 to over 450 - a result of opening our doors to everyone. Girls’ teams have flourished, Indigenous players are proudly represented on the field, and mental health is openly championed. This isn’t just a club you join - it’s a club you belong to.

Facilities & Growth

We’ve always believed that if we invest in our players and our place, success will follow.

The Bowen Seagulls now have a brand new clubhouse, delivered as part of a $1.2 million upgrade to Denison Park – our home base. This major investment has transformed our facilities and future.

We now have a central place where players, families and supporters can gather, celebrate, and grow together. The upgraded change rooms offer safe, inclusive spaces for all teams, including dedicated facilities for women and juniors. We’ve also added a new club meeting room, giving coaches, committee members and volunteers a place to plan, connect and build the future of the club.

These upgrades are more than just bricks and paint – they’re a symbol of what happens when community, council and club work together. Better facilities mean safer, more inclusive environments where kids can thrive, families can gather, and the community can connect. We’re not just growing a footy club – we’re building a space Bowen can be proud of.

Already, the new clubhouse has become a hub of activity – hosting team dinners, family nights, and community events that bring people together beyond game day. It’s not just about footy anymore – it’s about creating a strong, welcoming space where the whole community feels they belong.

The Blue Tree Project

At the heart of Denison Park stands a bold blue tree - a symbol that says “It’s OK to not be OK.” This Blue Tree Project installation serves as a powerful visual reminder that mental health matters. It creates a safe space where players and families know they’re supported both on and off the field.

Support On and Off the Field

We believe connection is just as important as competition. Whether you’re a junior, senior, parent or supporter, the Seagulls are here for you. Through open conversations, community partnerships, and inclusive values, we ensure no one faces tough times alone.

Coaching with Care

Our coaches do more than teach footy - they look out for the whole person. All coaches receive wellbeing awareness training, helping them recognise when a player might be struggling and respond with care. Mentorship is part of the game plan at Bowen Seagulls.
